How to Choose the Right Granite Color

The first step in determining which granite color will work best in your kitchen or bathroom is to decide whether a dark shade or light shade will be the best choice for your home.

Is your kitchen bright and full of windows and natural light? Or is it dark already, either by lack of lighting or cabinet color?

The general rule of thumb is a dark kitchen is best suited with light granite. If you have a brighter kitchen with plenty of natural light, you can choose either light or dark depending on the look you are aiming to achieve.

Next, decide if you want granite that has movement and/or veining in it, or if you want something that is more consistent in pattern. Some things you may want to consider when making this choice are:

Does your floor have a busy pattern to it? If the answer is yes, you might want granite that is more of a solid shade. Busy countertops and busy floors will compete for the eye’s attention.

Do you have an existing backsplash that you want to keep? If so, pay attention to the pattern in it. If your backsplash is solid, then choose granite that has a pattern it. If your backsplash is patterned, you may want to stick with a more solid style of granite.

A granite that has a lot of movement and/or veining in it is best in a kitchen that has a lot of counter space. The ample counter-space will show off the full effect of the pattern. For those kitchens that are on the smaller side, the best choice is a granite that isn't heavily patterned. Heavy patterns or veining will make an already small kitchen feel even smaller.

Using a more solid colored granite to give the kitchen a larger feel.

Ask to see samples and take a look at them inside of your kitchen. This will help you visualize the colors together. Usually, if you have lightcabinets, go with a medium to dark granite. Contrast is good. This will draw the eye to your countertops.
