Recycling glass is one of ways we can take part in reducing pollution and waste in our environment. Everyday we throw away tones of trash and glass is a large part of what is wasted. Instead of letting landfills pile up with even more glass, there are ways to recycle it and use it again for a different purpose. Broken or unused glass can be melted down and made into many different forms. One of the ways we can repurpose glass is by breaking it down and creating beautiful countertops. The trashed glass is taken to a recycling plant and broken up into smaller pieces called cullet. The broken pieces are crushed, sorted, cleaned, and prepared to be mixed with other raw materials like soda ash and sand. The raw materials and glass pieces are melted in a furnace and then shaped into moulds of different colours and sizes. New recycled bottles and jars are also made in this way.

One of the advantages of using recycled glass is it reduces related air pollution by 20% and related water pollution by 50%. Using recycled glass also reduces the space in landfills that would otherwise be taken up by used bottles and jars.
